The following is the English version:

I never thought I’d have the chance to watch a Huangmei Opera after returning home, let alone one as avant-garde as The Story of Luo Pa. This production boldly challenges societal norms and patriarchal traditions.

The female protagonist, Jin Sai, is cast out of both her husband’s and father’s homes, effectively becoming a “Nora.” Meanwhile, the shopkeeper’s husband is perpetually absent, rendering the traditional “patriarchal core” of the family almost non-existent. Together, these two women shoulder the responsibility of raising Jin Long, forming the beginnings of a “queer family” and demonstrating female solidarity, which subverts the authority of men within the family structure.

However, it’s disappointing that the resolution of Jin Long’s identity ultimately reverts to traditional values. By becoming the top-ranking scholar in the imperial examination, he appeals to a higher patriarchal system to vindicate his mother.

This plot design undoubtedly lends the narrative greater social acceptability but also weakens the continuity of the earlier rebellion. It seems to suggest that even when women achieve self-reliance, they still need to rely on an external authority (symbolized by the examination system and its promise of status) to gain societal recognition and legitimacy.

Overall, the opera conveys a “half-step rebellion.” While it challenges the patriarchal constraints imposed on women, it remains confined within the framework of mainstream ideology.
